A casement window opens on hinges rather than sliding, and the difference shows up at the seal. Where the leaf of a sliding window meets the frame with a brush and a small overlap, a casement leaf closes against a gasket along its whole perimeter, so it keeps out wind driven rain and draughts more effectively. That is the reason casement windows are often specified for high-rise buildings and for sites that take strong wind.
The leaves can open outwards or inwards, in one or several panels, and are held closed by a handle and a multi-point lock. Vertical sliding is the other option in this range: a slim frame system where the sash travels up and down inside the frame, which suits taller openings and keeps the floor clear.
Wall thickness follows the same range as the sliding window, starting at 1.4 mm and rising with the size of the leaf and the wind load on the elevation. Glass is single or double-glazed, and a stainless steel mesh panel is available.
