A sliding door is the standard answer to an opening that leads to a terrace, a garden or a balcony, because the leaves travel sideways along a rail and nothing swings into the room. Two or more leaves run on rollers, and the floor of the room stays clear.
Where the opening is very large the leaves get heavy, and that is where lift and slide hardware comes in. As the leaf is opened, the hardware raises it off the gasket; as it closes, it lowers the leaf back onto the gasket. Moving the leaf is therefore done on the rollers rather than against the seal, which is what makes a very large glass leaf possible to operate by hand. The seal itself is better than a plain sliding leaf, because the leaf settles onto the gasket rather than sliding across it.
French and folding doors do the opposite job: instead of stacking the leaves to one side, they clear the full width of the opening, which suits a room that opens onto a terrace or a garden where the whole elevation should be usable.
The track can be exposed or concealed, the glazing is normally double with tempered glass available, and on high-rise or cyclone exposed elevations the profile and the glass are selected against the calculated wind load rather than by size alone.
