Herringbone turns each piece through 90 degrees; chevron mitres the ends at 45 degrees so they meet in a point.

The pieces are cut to the pattern, not trimmed from straight boards, which is why the pattern costs more in material.

Parquet is a floor laid to a pattern rather than in straight runs, and the two patterns in this range are worked out differently. Herringbone turns each piece through 90 degrees so the ends meet at right angles and the floor steps across the room. Chevron mitres the ends of each piece at 45 degrees, so the two pieces meet in a point and the pattern reads as a series of arrows.
Either way, the pieces are cut to the pattern. That is what makes parquet more expensive in material than a straight lay: a herringbone or chevron floor generates more offcut, because the ends are mitred and the edges of the room have to be worked to, and the cutting is planned rather than simply run out.
The boards themselves are built in three layers, a balancing layer top and bottom with a core between them, under the timber surface. Some ranges click together and others are glued down. Surfaces run from brushed to hand scraped, sawn mark, and the grey and white ranges that have been in demand for some years.
