Laminate is a board rather than a plank: a high density fibreboard core, a printed decor paper, and a transparent wear layer, pressed into one panel. The decor is a photograph of wood or stone, so the range covers far more patterns and colours than a real timber floor would, and the pattern repeats evenly from board to board.
Two thicknesses cover most of the market, 8 mm and 12 mm, and the wear rating is stated on the board as AC3 or AC4. That rating is the number buyers compare first, because it describes how the surface holds up to traffic, and it is worth stating alongside the thickness rather than instead of it.
The one thing to be careful about is water. Laminate has a fibreboard core, so it behaves differently from an SPC plank in a bathroom or a utility room, and the specification should say where the floor can be laid rather than claiming water resistance in general terms.
