The slab is cast rather than quarried, so there are no open pores for liquid to sit in and staining is not the issue it is with natural stone.
Jumbo slabs
3200 × 1600 mm is the common jumbo size, which is what allows a long counter or an island top to be cut in one piece instead of joined.
Four thicknesses
15, 18, 20 and 30 mm, with 20 mm the standard for counters and 30 mm for heavier work.

Engineered quartz is a cast slab rather than a quarried one: mineral aggregate bound in resin, pressed and cured into a panel. Casting is what gives the material its two characteristics.
The first is that the slab is non-porous. Without the open pores of a natural stone, liquid sits on the surface rather than soaking in, so a kitchen counter does not take a stain from oil or wine in the way a marble top can, and it does not need sealing on a schedule.
The second is the size. The common jumbo slab is 3200 × 1600 mm, which is what allows a long counter or a kitchen island to be cut in one piece; where the run is longer than the slab, it has to be joined, and the joint is the part that shows. Regular slabs around 3020 × 1420 mm cover the smaller work.
Thicknesses are 15, 18, 20 and 30 mm, with 20 mm the standard for counters and 30 mm for heavier work. That choice is also a weight decision, since a 20 mm slab already runs about 200 to 220 kg and a 30 mm slab can exceed 380 kg, which matters once the order is being packed and shipped.
