Granite, quartzite and onyx are grouped together because all three are denser natural stones than marble, and each one answers a different part of a project.
Granite is the hardest wearing of the three. It takes in very little water and resists scratching, which is what makes it the usual choice for exterior walls, floors and kitchen counters, and why it is the stone to reach for where marble would be at risk. Slabs run about 274 to 335 cm long and 152 to 198 cm wide in 20 and 30 mm thicknesses.
Quartzite sits between granite and marble. It is harder than marble and takes in less water, while carrying veining that reads close to marble, so it suits countertops and kitchen islands where the appearance matters as much as the wear.
Onyx and translucent stone are chosen for a different reason: they can be lit from behind, so a feature wall becomes a lit panel with the stone in front of it. That is a specification that has to be settled with the lighting rather than after it.
