Pool surrounds
Travertine is a common choice around pools, where the stone stays cooler underfoot than a polished surface.

Limestone and travertine are sedimentary stones, softer and more open in texture than granite, and they are usually supplied in strip and ledger formats rather than as large slabs. Two formats cover most of the work: 50 × 200 mm strips, and ledger panels around 240 × 60 mm (24 × 6 in), both of which lay up as a coursed wall with a natural variation from piece to piece.
The finishes are what fit the stone to the setting. Honed gives a matte surface, tumbled rounds the edges, split face leaves the stone broken along its natural bed for a rough wall, and brushed keeps the surface open. On exterior grades the finish is stated as anti-slip and weather resistant, which is the description to look for when the stone is going outside.
Travertine is a common choice around swimming pools, where a honed or tumbled surface stays cooler underfoot than a polished one and offers grip when wet. The same stone is used indoors for feature walls and around fireplaces, where the coursed format gives a wall texture that a flat slab does not.
