Marble is a natural stone, cut from the quarry block rather than made, and that is the source of both its character and the way it has to be specified. The veining is the record of how the stone formed, so every slab carries its own movement of colour, and two slabs from the same block can be opened out against each other to mirror the pattern across a joint.
Slabs run about 270 to 305 cm (108 to 120 in) long and 150 to 185 cm (60 to 72 in) wide, in 18, 20 and 30 mm thicknesses. The finish is normally polished, which brings the colour up and gives a reflective surface for walls and counters, and honed is available where a matte surface is wanted. Patterns across the range include Carrara, Calacatta Gold, Black Marquina, Breccia Rosso and Ice Jade Green, alongside grey and white ranges.
The range covers interior walls, floors, feature walls, bathroom vanities and stair treads. One thing worth settling in the specification is where the stone is going: natural marble takes in water more readily than granite or quartz and can show efflorescence, so a wet area or an exterior elevation is better served by a different stone or by a different finish.
