What Defines It
Terrazzo, also called IPS, is the strongest single marker of Indian residential interiors and largely replaces tile as a flooring choice.
Contemporary apartments mix low-backed sofas with individual carved teak pieces such as a coffee table or sideboard, plus a small amount of rattan or bamboo. Block-printed cotton cushions and bedding carry indigo and madder red, over plain dhurrie rugs. Brass appears in light fittings, handles and vessels rather than brushed stainless steel. A ceiling fan is a necessity given the climate, not a decorative addition.
The traditional line uses baithak floor seating, a continuous low platform along the walls with bolsters rather than sofas. Carved teak, jali pierced screens and white marble inlay with pietra dura are the structural language. Brass trays, cup sets and pierced brass pendants complete the setting, with colour carried by textiles on a cream ground.
